His father was Peter Shortt - tea estate manager at Langharjan Tea Estate in Assam for 22 years.
Created the Tea History Collection in Banbury
Denys lived in Assam for his first 5 years, then in Fort Portal, Uganda and Thika in Kenya on the Ikumbi tea estate owned by Brooke Bond.
He went to Warwick School. Played hockey for England from age 15 to 21.
